My Beloved Wicca

I have been a follower of the Wiccan path since I was 15 (I’m now 25, so it definitely wasn’t a phase!), and have always practised alone, my Wiccan name being Caae.

I’ve been inspired to write to this post after watching Kendra of the First Wiccan Church on the Biography channel the other night.

She just came across so well, with an accurate depiction of the path. She seems like a very insightful lady, and it’s refreshing to see her able to tackle bigotry with concise words and a tactful approach.

She, as well as many other Wiccans, have had to deal with comments with regard to devil worship and satanism. We simply do not have anything to do with Devils or Satan. Not a thingy-dingy. Zip. Nowt. Zilch.

Anyway, the real point of this post was now that Mabon (the 2nd harvest festival) has passed, Samhain (pronounced Sa-ween) is almost upon us. This is a significant time in the Wiccan calendar since it is the festival of the year’s last harvest (Our New Year!). It is also a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual plane is the thinnest.

This is the time when Wiccans celebrate the life and death of all things. The cycle of life. Deceased ancestors and beloved family members/friends/pets/familiars are asked to join us on this night to be honoured, respected and, of course, celebrated – as all creatures, living or dead, should be!

Kendra performed the Samhain ritual with many Christians, and non-believers in her midst. I was just amazed at how enlightened many of them were once they had seen what Wicca is all about!

It was just fantastic, I really hope more people see their documentary, it was really well done and she should be proud of the way she presented her beliefs.

Although, one thing I really would like to know is why she chose to call her establishment a ‘Church’ , and why she labelled herself as a ‘Reverand’ when she was a High Priestess? Trying to make a link between Wicca and Christianity doesn’t make sense to me. Wicca runs far, far back into the roots of Paganism. Pagan and Celtic religions were established in the UK a long time before Christianity and the Church were even presented to the Western World by the Romans.

I guess as an English/Scottish witch, the link seems crazy to me. Maybe it’s different from an American point of view. But to me, I can feel the ancient roots attached to my beliefs without the Christian perspective clouding it. I’ve always thought that I was probably once the local witch/herbalist in early Medieval times! Not quite the pagan era, though :P

Other than that small grievance, it was a good program! If you have the chance, and you would like to know more about Wicca, please read about Kendra and her work HERE :)

BLESSED BE!!
